International STEAM Education (ISE) offers the first cross-disciplinary workshop, called "Computer Meets Science", which combines computer vision binary classifiers using deep learning with convolutional neural networks (ConvNet). This innovative workshop allows students to explore the intersection of computer science and biological sciences.
The core exercise of the workshop involves training the ConvNet in safe/hazardous situations and exploring biological sciences with Petri dishes to target cellular and bacterial growth using microscopes. By combining these two fields of study, students gain a unique understanding of the applications of technology in the life sciences and the potential for innovative solutions in fields such as medicine and biotechnology.
This workshop is designed for students in years 7 to 9 who have an intermediate level of coding expertise. It is an excellent opportunity for students to expand their knowledge and skills in computer science and biology while developing their problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
Overall, ISE's "Computer Meets Science" workshop is a great way to encourage cross-disciplinary learning and expose students to the exciting possibilities of combining different fields of study. The workshop's focus on deep learning and convolutional neural networks ensures that students learn cutting-edge techniques. At the same time, the practical applications in biological sciences provide a real-world context for their learning.
